CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

MARCUS

I stood there staring up at a boy about my age, only much wider and taller than me. To my right stood Nate, staving off the guy’s sidekicks. To my left, Derrick did the same. The boy shifted his weight on the balls of his feet and cracked his knuckles.

“Man, I know you’ve been with my girl, so stop playing dumb,” said the boy.

“I already told you,” I said. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Apparently, he didn’t like that answer. The boy swung at me, but I managed to sidestep his blow. Although he stumbled, he quickly recovered. He came at me again, but Nate placed himself between us while pulling something out of his pocket. In the same movement, Nate blocked the boy’s outstretched arm and jammed the object quickly into the inner arm of the bicep. The boy cursed and grabbed at his arm. Commotion to my right and left drew my attention as they boy backed down.

Our classmates and some parents had gathered around us as police lights flashed. Accompanied by an officer, Dad pushed through the crowd.

“That’s enough, boys!” Dad yelled.

“Everyone back away,” the officer commanded.

The crowd of kids and parents dispersed. Another officer approached and signaled to us.

“You three come with me,” said the other officer.

“Marcus,” said Dad. “I’ll join you shortly. I’m going to work on crowd control first and then talk to your friends Janice and Alissa about what they found.”

Alissa caught my gaze in the distance. I nodded as I trusted her to give Dad just enough information. Though Dad could be trusted, we still suspected him of hiding something from us, maybe for out ow protection. I watched as Dad caught up with Janice and Alissa and led them into a building.

I caught up with Nate, Derrick and Trae, all of whom were already at the police squad car with a tall, athletic man.

“I can assure you, officer,” said the man. “I’m Trae’s dad, and these boys had nothing to do with any of this.” He made a sweeping gesture of the parking lot to include Nate and me in his generalization.

“A few statements, starting from the beginning, are all we need right now,” said the officer. He directed his attention to me. “Marcus Kahale, right? Why don’t you go first since you were the apparent target of this attack? Have you and this boy met before today?”

“He doesn’t even go to our school,” I said. “I don’t even know his name. The four of us were in the parking lot talking about open positions on the basketball team when this guy and his two friends rolled up on us.”

“We just finished with an athletic meeting for spring sports,” Derrick added.

“Is this meeting an exclusive event?” asked the officer. “Outsiders aren’t permitted?”

“None,” Trae piped up. “But we sometimes—”

“Watch it son,” Trae’s dad said sternly.

Trae ignored his father and continued. “Anyway, we sometimes see these guys coming over here to use our outdoor court. But we’ve never had any real interaction with them.
